Snowfall-in-shimla_Hindustan Times 429

Minimum temperatures to drop significantly over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar In the last 24 hours, temperatures in East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have dropped significantly by 2-3°C and most of the places in Central India are also under the mark of 2-3°C. These weather conditions can be attributed to the presence of icy cold northeasterly winds blowing from the hills of North India bringing in severe winter over the plains. frost-on-crop

frost-on-cropWinter chill has intensified across the plains of Northwest India in the last few days. This has left most parts of the region reeling under severe cold wave conditions. Now, the dipping mercury have led to the formation of ground frost over several parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi NCR, North Rajasthan and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. According to Skymet Weather, night temperatures across these places are settling below 5 degrees. In fact, some places are also recording sub-zero temperatures. Due to such cold temperatures, the dew on the ground freezes and forms a thin layer of ice known as frost.
This frost poses intense threat to the farmers as it has the potential to damage the standing crop. The layer of ice suffocates the crop and do not let plants breathe. Though there is some relief on the cards but entire let up is not likely any soon. A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching Jammu and Kashmir and is likely to affect the weather by January 14. As a result, minimums will increase over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan, leading to abatement of frost conditions. Meanwhile, mercury will continue to settle on the lower side over West Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh that will continue with frost. Weather Forecast for Jan 14: Snow in Kashmir, HP, Relief from cold wave in Punjab, Haryana, UP

Please Note: Any information picked from here should be attributed to skymetweather.com

Snowfall in Shimla expected around weekend after severe cold wave

Snowfall in Shimla expected around weekend after severe cold waveThe month of December was mild and not much weather activity was observed over the plains as well as the hills of North India. Thereafter, during the first week of January, snow once again made an appearance over the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. In fact, this was the first heavy snow spell observed over the city during this winter season. At present, the weather has cleared up. However, severe cold wave conditions have been wreaking havoc over Shimla. In fact, the minimum temperature settled at -3.2 degrees yesterday. Punjab-rain

Punjab-rainPlains of North India are all set to witness second spell of winters rains during the next 24 hours. According to Skymet Weather, Punjab is likely to see light to moderate rains over many parts, while scattered showers are likely over Haryana. Rains will start making appearance from late night hours of Saturday and will pick up pace by January 15. Weathermen predict the rainy spell to continue till January 16. Weather over Delhi-NCR will remain mainly cloudy with chances of one or two short spells of rain and thundershowers over some parts on Monday.
These approaching rains can be attributed to the fresh Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir and its induced cyclonic circulation over Central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab region. These systems have also changed the weather pattern over the region. Cold and dry northwesterly winds are now replaced by relatively warm and humid southeasterlies. These winds will now increase the moisture content in the atmosphere, leading to gradual increase in the minimum temperatures. As a result, cold wave conditions are likely to abate from most parts of the region barring few areas. Not only this, fog will also make a comeback and shallow to moderate fog may occur over the areas of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi-NCR. Punjab rain

Punjab rain Since the beginning of January many parts of Punjab have been witnessing on and off light rain during the active western disturbance which affected hills and adjoining Punjab around January 5-6. Good rains were witnessed by Punjab last night once again as a cyclonic circulation has developed and we expected light to moderate rains at many district of Punjab in next 24-48 hours. Whenever an active western disturbance approaches Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh simultaneously an induced cyclonic circulation developed over Punjab which gives good rain over the state.
Due to these rains maximum temperatures of many districts of Punjab will witness significant fall but severe winter chill which was witness since last few days will not be there as the minimums are expected to rise further. This rise in temperature is due to the cloud cover and absence of icy cold winds. After January 16 weather will clear up and minimum temperatures will once again witness a fall but this time around the fall of temperatures will be marginal above in order of 1-2°C. These rains will in fact benefit the Rabi crops. Due to rainfall and increase in minimums which helped the ground frost to persist in Punjab will now also shed away. Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh to see upward trend in minimums

Winter in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh

Winter in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh Many parts of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have been witnessing drop in minimum temperatures since last few days. This has led to cold wave conditions over both the states. In fact, one or two places of East Madhya Pradesh have recorded freezing temperatures namely Umaria and Damoh which recorded 1.9°C and 0.2°C, respectively. Similarly Mumbai in Maharashtra recorded 11.9°C, followed by Pune 7.4°C and Nashik 5.8°C, thus recording season’s lowest minimums. The reason for this significant drop in night temperatures can be attributed to the dry and cold winds blowing from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh across the northern plains reaching up to Maharashtra.
At present, a cyclonic circulation is marked over Punjab and adjoining areas. Due to the development of this system, the flow of icy cold winds from the north has been obstructed. Now easterly-southeasterly winds, which are relatively warm and humid in nature will once again hover over many parts of Maharashtra. These winds will increase the minimums and thus abating cold wave conditions from the region. Comparatively, West Madhya Pradesh, Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra have witnessed a significant increase in temperatures than the other parts. Temperatures are expected to further rise marginally over these aforementioned areas. With this, we can say that the severe winter chill which was prevailing since last 4 to 5 days has taken a leave from the region. Image Credit: riseforindia.com

Cold wave abates Northern plains of India for now

Cold wave abates Northern plains of India for now In the recent past, many parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi along with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were reeling under cold wave conditions due to extreme low temperatures. Temperatures reaches sub-zero degree Celsius which is not a frequent site in Northern plains. But now as a cyclonic circulation has formed over Punjab and western disturbance has approached over Jammu and Kashmir which has increased the cloud cover over Northern plains. Temperatures have increased by 4-5°C in last 3 days. Like Amritsar on January 12 recorded chilly minimum temperature of 0.8°C and shot up to 4.6°C today morning. Similar was with the case of Ludhiana that recorded minimums of 1.7°C on January 12, 2017 and witnessed 5.7°C morning. Temperatures in Meerut in last 24 hours shot up from 3.1°C to 6°C.
Churu in Rajasthan had recorded -1.9°C on January 12, 2017 but today morning 5.4°C. Hisar in Haryana recorded 1.1°C on January 13 and now the minimum temperatures settle at 4.6°C. Narnaul in Haryana witnessed bone chilling temperatures of -0.5°C on January 12, 2017 has the current minimum temperatures of 3.5°C. So as of now we can say that the cold wave conditions prevailing over many parts of northwestern plains has now abated. Now due to significant increase in minimum temperatures, the ongoing severe winter conditions have eased up. As the icy cold winds have been cut off and back to back western disturbances are expected to continue therefore we do not expect the night temperatures to fall significantly over all these areas. As January progresses the normal temperatures will also keep on increasing therefore we can say that severe winter will not make a comeback as of now.
