Upcoming destructive solar storm to cause damages worth $40bn

Upcoming destructive solar storm to cause damages worth $40bn In a recent study published by Space Weather stated that the upcoming solar storm sometime in next decade would have an unfathomable destruction on human lives. Researchers working at the Cambridge Centre for Risk Studies at the University of Cambridge have estimated that a severe solar storm can cause damages worth $40 billion. A major part of this damage will be bore by the electricity generators and power grids. Reports have stated that a blackout will happen that will vary from few hours to few months depending up on the severity of the solar storm. The study’s also states that the extreme blackout scenario would affect 66% of the U.S. population.
And such a solar flare or solar storm is not new to the planet Earth. In August 1859, such a solar flare was observed across the globe. People living in Queensland back then observed auroras which are highly uncommon for the location. Places near the equator like the Caribbean, the Rocky Mountains, Northern Africa, Hawaii, and even Colombia witnessed auroras. This event was known as “Carrington event” as it was first recorded by the English astronomer Richard C. Carrington. Such an event at this point of our lives would mean losses in billions of dollars. Researchers have proposed that if only North USA is affected then the losses would mount up to $6.2 billion. If the solar flare affected 23 percent of the population of the planet then the total cost would be around $16.5 billion per day. There rates were calculated according to the value of the U.S. dollar in 2011. Image Credit: wikipedia Please Note: Any information picked from here must be attributed to skymetweather.com

chana feature

chana post Indian weather has always been notorious and unpredictable. It is not always easy to predict what weather has stored in for the economy and the agricultural sector of the country. Sowing of a particular crop depends massively on the weather forecast. However, this Monsoon bought a lot of hope for the agriculture industry keenly, for the states producing Gram or Chana. Gram is one of the most popularly sowing crops in India and Indian states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Karnataka are the largest producers of Gram in the country. During a normal season, all the four Chana producing states cultivates on 30.595, 15.30, 13.712 and 9.232 lakh hectares of area.
As per reports, this year in total an area of around 98.39 lakh hectares has been used for Gram cultivation in comparison with that of 89.08 lakh hectares sown at the corresponding period of last year. This year, overall, 32.52 lakh hectares of Chana has been sown in Madhya Pradesh, 17.514 lakh hectares in Rajasthan, Maharashtra used 18.40 lakh hectares for sowing gram while 10.80 lakh hectares of Chana was sown in Karnataka. As the Monsoon season in the country went by pretty well, it improved the Chana sowing in the country. Moreover, farmers were fortified by the higher MSP of Rs 4000 per quintals plus bonuses and attractive market prices. This further led to further boosting up of the Chana crop in India. Since the weather seems promising in the majority of Chana producing states, this season too seems to be favorable to be a good crop year for Chana crop. This can be further marked by the prevailing Chana prices in different markets. The anticipation of a plentiful domestic crop, profuse imported crop and a stable increase in arrivals of the new crop across the country have influenced the Chana prices in chief markets of the country. As per reports, in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh Chana is trading at a rate of Rs. 6300 while in the same city, Rajasthan Chana is seen presiding at Rs.6700 per quintals.  Image Credit: Youtube Please Note: Any information picked up from here must be attributed to skymetweather.com

Snow in J&K_Times of India blog 429

Image credit: Times of India

Delhi Rain-at-india-gate_Prokerala 429
