Avalanche hits army base camp in Jammu and Kashmir

Avalanche hits army base camp in Jammu and Kashmir
Jan 26, 2017 03:00 PM

Heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the Western Himalayas has resulted in an avalanche. The avalanche hit an army base camp in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir region. The body of a jawan has also been recovered following the avalanche. As per sources from the Indian Army, the death toll is expected to rise even further. Skymet Weather had already provided an alert regarding the possibility of avalanches in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas. These weather conditions are attributed to the presence of a very active Western Disturbance which has been resulting in heavy rain and snow over the hilly states of North India.
It is not the first avalanche that has hit the Jammu and Kashmir region in the last 24 hours. In fact, another avalanche was observed last night in Budugam in Gurez sector in the Bandipora district last night due to which at least four people were buried alive.  Rescue teams had rushed to the area, as per reports. As per Skymet Weather, heavy to very heavy rainfall along with snow is expected to continue during the next 24 hours as well. In fact, the possibility of avalanches during the above-mentioned period also cannot be ruled out. IND vs ENG: Rain to spare T20 match in Kanpur

IND vs ENG: Rain to spare T20 match in KanpurWeather conditions have turned rainy in the plains of North India during the last 24 hours. So much so that even now, several parts of Delhi and the NCR region along with parts of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana have been witnessing good rainfall activity accompanied with lightning strikes. These weather conditions can be attributed to the presence of an induced cyclonic circulation over North Pakistan and adjoining areas of Punjab and Rajasthan developed under the influence of the prevailing Western Disturbance in the hills of North India. However, the state of Uttar Pradesh has been spared from any rains. The T20 series between India and England which is scheduled to begin today in Kanpur is likely to be spared. The weather conditions are expected to remain cloudy throughout the match.
However, the possibility of rainfall is highly unlikely as rains are likely to begin during the late-night hours and continue until tomorrow. Thus, no interruption of rainfall is likely in the first match of the three T20 match series which is scheduled at 4:30 pm. The T20 series is the first for newbie Captain Virat Kohli. India has already won the ODI series against England 2-1 with Yuvraj Singh making a smashing comeback. MS Dhoni has also been a star performer after scoring 134 runs in the second match. The newbie Kedar Jadhav has also been a boon for the Indian Team. Image Credit: TOI Please Note: Any information picked from here must be attributed to skymetweather.com

Chennai rains

Chennai rains Weather of Chennai has remained mostly dry since the beginning of January. Though, light rainy spells were observed by the state capital on the very first day of the month. Thereafter, rain remained absent over the city.  At present, Chennai is observing pleasant weather conditions, particularly during the day though nights are comparatively warmer. Mercury has been settling above average. During the last 24 hours, Chennai witnessed lows of 25.7°C which is five degrees above the normal. However, now, it seems that rain gods are bequeathing some sympathy on the Chennaities thereby eliminating the elongated dry spells. Hence, scattered rains and thundershowers are expected to lash the city by today late night or early morning tomorrow. In fact, people in the city have been witnessing cloudy weather from last night and clouding is likely to increase over parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai by tonight. Few rain traces have also been observed over parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai.  The reason for these showers can be attributed to a trough of low that persists over Southwest Bay of Bengal off the Comorin coast. Furthermore, due to this, the easterly waves are also likely to get activated which will lead to increase in clouding. Isolated pockets of the city are expected to witness rains until January 28. Moreover, temperatures are also expected to fall by 2-3°C. Image Credit: baradwajrangan Please Note: Any information picked from here must be attributed to skymetweather.com

Kashmir Avalanche_Newsx 429

Weather in Delhi

Weather in DelhiAfter witnessing good rains and thundershowers, weather over Delhi-NCR has now clear up. With this, maximums temperatures that had dropped significantly, will now start rising towards the normal. Clear weather conditions have also paved way for cold and dry northwesterly winds once again. With this, night temperatures that had once mounted to 16°C, almost eight degrees above normal, will also start registering a dip by one or two degrees. Thus, in the coming days, we can expect comfortable days with bright sunshine but nights will be cooler. However, bone chilling wintery conditions are not likely to make a comeback over the region at least for the next few days. On Thursday, the national capital recorded widespread heavy rainfall to the tune of 30 mm. With this, Delhi had also surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 19.3 mm. These rains were on account of a strong cyclonic circulation that had travelled all across the northwestern plains, right from North Rajasthan to West Uttar Pradesh. So far in January, Palam Observatory has recorded 41.7 mm of rain, while Safdarjung Observatory has received 33.7 mm. These rainfall figures have made January 2017 the rainiest January in the span of last 18 years. Tamil Nadu rains

Tamil Nadu rains.jpg After a dry Northeast Monsoon, rains have finally showed up in both the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the last couple of days thereby eliminating the prolonged dry spell. So much so that many parts of the states have ended up recording heavy rains as well. In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Pamban witnessed a whopping of 131 mm of rainfall, followed by Coonoor that recorded 80 mm. Likewise, Coimbatore witnessed 16 mm, Kodaikanal 14 mm, Periakulum 14 mm, Alapuzha 21 mm and Kottayam 17 mm of rainfall. The reason for these good showers can be credited to a trough of low which is extending from Gulf of Mannar up to North Tamil Nadu. Another trough is seen from Konkan and Goa region up to Comorin area in lower levels. Moreover, the easterly winds are also moderate in nature along the coast thus fuelling the system, paving way for rain and thundershowers across the states.
According to Skymet Weather, in the next 24 hours this rain activity is likely to reduce over northern and interior parts of Tamil Nadu. However, light rains are expected to continue over rest of the state, Kerala and South Coastal Karnataka. The weather is expected to remain pleasant over all these areas. Northeast India Rains 2

Northeast India Rains 1 During the winter season, due to successive Western Disturbances, northeastern states manage to receive good rain and thundershowers. But so far this season, many parts of these states are reeling under the rainfall deficiency by more than 80%. A Western Disturbance was seen moving across the Tibet region. Also, a cyclonic circulation developed over Meghalaya and adjoining areas. Thus, with the combined effect of these systems, rain was expected to occur at many places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. But only clouding prevailed for elongated period over the region, but only light showers were observed over most parts during last 24 hours. In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Tawang witnessed 6 mm of rainfall, followed by Mazbat that recorded 5 mm. Likewise, Tinsukia witnessed 8 mm, Anni 2 mm, North Lakhimpur 2 mm, Dibrugarh 0.5 mm, Passighat 0.1, Itanagar 0.8 mm and Shillong 0.4 mm of rainfall.
Now, as the Western disturbance is seen moving away and the persisting cyclonic circulation has also became insignificant, rain is likely to abate from the plains; however isolated rain with light thundering will continue over the hilly terrains. With this, we can say that rainfall deficiency will continue to prevail over northeastern states. Image Credit: thebetterindia.com

Punjab-rain

Punjab-rain After witnessing a rainy Republic Day, Punjab rains took a backseat thereby making the weather go dry again. However, now, people in Punjab are expected to take their brollies out as weather is expected to become rainy once again. As per Skymet Weather, a Western Disturbance is likely to affect the northern hills, including the states Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This is likely to bring rain or snow to the hilly states. Alongside, under the influence of this Western Disturbance, rains are likely to even show up in the adjoining northern plains especially in the state of Punjab. Particularly the northern parts of the state including districts like Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot and other northern districts of the state are more prone to witnessing the showers in next 24 hours. Thus, these will be short-lived rainy spells that the state is predicted to witness.
Henceforth, the weather will become dry again. However, then, another fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect the Western Himalayas and adjoining plains. This would result in the second spell of rains over Punjab around February 3. Moreover, this would be comparatively intense and is likely to cover a larger area. Thus, in a nutshell, it can be said that January is expected to end on a rainy note for Punjab.
